Neill Blomkamp Confirms New “Alien” Sequel; Sigourney Weaver to Return?

After years and years of waiting, we are finally getting Alien 5. Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Chappie) officially sealed the deal with 20th Century Fox to develop a new sequel to the groundbreaking horror series. Back in January, Blomkamp broke the hearts of horror fans everywhere when he posted on Instagram that his work with the franchise may never reach fruition, but now the heat is back on and he’s confirmed the film’s existence with a new post on the ‘gram, saying “Um… So I think it’s officially my next film. #alien.” Stay low and build, folks.

Alien 5 will stand separate from Ridley Scott’s Prometheus 2, but the franchise’s original director will serve as producer for both films. And according to sources close to the deal, Alien 5 will take place years after Prometheus 2.

As far as Sigourney Weaver’s reprisal of the prolific Lieutenant Ellen Ripley is concerned, it seems likely. Weaver was originally attached to Blomkamp’s film before the supposed cancellation, but now that it’s back on, we expect her to be ready for action. Earlier this month, she went on record saying she’d be onboard for Alien 5 if Blomkamp directed and last night she appeared on The Tonight Show to promote her latest film, Blomkamp’s Chappie. While on the show, Weaver joked about Louis C.K.’s desire to die a gruesome death in Alien 5.

This is big news for the horror genre. The last direct Alien sequel came out in 1997, and since then we’ve dealt with two well-intentioned, yet dreadful Alien vs. Predator films and the pseudo-Alien film, Prometheus. No further details regarding the film has been revealed, but stay tuned, because we’re all over this one.
