DOPE, the Pharrell Williams-produced coming-of-age tale and breakout hit movie of the summer, has received an overwhelming amount of praise for its fresh talent and modern take on what it means to be a PoC in these tension-filled times. As lead character Malcolm (portrayed by Shameik Moore) so vehemently talks about throughout the film, it is a self-proclaimed ode to ’90s hip-hop and culture, with the newly released soundtrack reflecting that same sentiment.
The project features a number of legendary hip-hop acts – including Nas, Naughty By Nature, Digital Underground, and A Tribe Called Quest – who all grace the soundtrack with original content throughout. It also features two original tracks from the movie’s fictional (or real?) band Awreeoh, which was played by the film’s quirky main characters Malcolm, Diggy, and Jib.
The soundtrack is certifiably dope – all pun intended. Stream it below now and be sure to check out Awreeoh’s new video for “Don’t Get Deleted” below as well.
