Just because you binge-watched shows like Marvel’s Jessica Jones or Bill Burr’s F Is For Family in one sitting, doesn’t mean that you’re living up to your full Netflix and Chill potential. If you truly want to be a world-class couch surfer, you have to unlock all of the hidden categories offered by the streaming service.
In order to achieve your full binge-watching potential, you’ll need some secret category codes created by Netflix engineers. First you need to visit the Netflix website, where each genre has its own URL (for example, here’s the one for Documentaries: www.netflix.com/browse/genre/6839). Then simply alter the digits at the end of the URL to uncover various hidden genres like Film Noir. The hidden categories you’ll find using this trick can get as specific as slapstick comedies from the 1980’s to scary movies based on books. Not every combination unlocks a hidden sub-genre of films, but your code cracking efforts are sure to reap plenty of results that would otherwise go undiscovered.
For those that didn’t get the memo, as of Wednesday, cinephiles in 130 new countries can now partake in exploring the nexus of Netflix (or just use the cheat sheets found here and here). You can read up on how Netflix organizes its content over at The Atlantic.
