Success isn’t for everyone—just take a look at Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ story. In 2015, the two dominated with “Thrift Shop” and “Can’t Hold Us,” won four Grammys, and quickly found themselves in need of break. “We weren’t sleeping,” Macklemore told Complex, adding, “The pressure and the fame—everything. All the clichés, man—like not being able to walk around, having no privacy… I just wanted to escape.” Eventually, they found it.
In a trailer for their upcoming album, This Unruly Mess I’ve Made, fans of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis get a closer look at what the duo was going through. “I was too comfortable, and being comfortable is what kills artists,” he said. “I didn’t know what I wanted to say. I didn’t know how the ink would stick to the page, how to let go of the anxiety and the fear that latched on to my vocal cords.” His journey fuels the message behind this powerful 3-minute trailer.
This Unruly Mess I’ve Made is due out on February 26. It’s the follow-up to 2013’s The Heist. So far, they’ve let loose “Downtown,” “Growing Up,” and “Kevin,” each moving them closer to finding their lane.
