Elizabeth Banks Joins “Power Rangers” Reboot as Rita Repulsa

The stars are aligning and Dean Israelite’s supremely anticipated Power Rangers reboot is gearing up for its March 2017 release. Over the past several months, Lionsgate and Saban have worked tirelessly at casting the new batch of teenage superheroes and now they’ve locked in the film’s main antagonist. Earlier today, Elizabeth Banks formally announced that she’s joined the cast as the group’s archenemy Rita Repulsa. “After 10,000 years, I’m free! It’s time to conquer Earth!!⚡️ Time to play #RitaRepulsa #PowerRangersMovie,” she tweeted. Casting Banks is an interesting choice, but it makes total sense. She has experience with transforming her look for a role thanks to her run as the eccentric Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games franchise.

There’s a lot we know and don’t know about Israelite’s reimagining. While we’ve got the majority of the cast locked down, there’s still plenty of roles to fill. As for its tone, we can expect it to carry a more mature theme, but still maintaining its playful vibe. If you’ve seen the ridiculously adult-oriented fan tribute that released early last year, don’t get your hopes up, the studio isn’t going that dark. Power Rangers will, however, serve as a retelling of the first season with the original characters confirmed by the studio.

We’ve got plenty of time until the film’s March 24, 2017, release, so expect plenty more casting news and, of course, the inevitable trailer that I’m sure we’ll all be salivating over. For now, check out Banks’ announcement and the rest of the cast down below.
