Yasiin Bey has been busy for the last few months. After permanently moving out of the United States and announcing his retirement from the rap game, the artist formerly known as Mos Def has since taken up new ventures (including a stint in the stand-up comedy circuit) and has decided to head into the world of fashion with his latest endeavor. Announced Tuesday, Bey is now officially the creative director of Unknown Union – a South African brand based out of New York and Cape Town.
Bey’s role will include assuming leadership over the company’s overall brand creative and concepting, while also assisting in the launch of the new Original Royals Collection. Paying homage to the history of the Basotho People (a Bantu ethnic group from southern Africa), the collection is inspired by the many traditional materials and designs from the group. Pieces in the collection will be constructed from authentic Basotho traditional blankets and will be manufactured by Aranda Textile Mills, with assistance from the royal family of Lesotho. In addition, Unknown Union will also collaborate with Bey’s media collective, A Country Called Earth, for an exclusive collection, to be released at a later date.
You can expect the Original Royals Collection, Yasiin Bey’s first with collaborative effort with Unknown Union, to debut at Capsule Las Vegas on February 17.[via Hypebeast]
