Back in February of last year, music video director Joseph Kahn unveiled his masterpiece, an unofficial Power Rangers short film that reacquainted us with all our favorite Rangers and the extraterrestrial antagonist Rita Repulsa. It was decidedly a grand slam and brought back a lot of buzz, which would inevitably give new life to the upcoming Power Rangers reboot that’s appeared in headlines over the last several weeks. The unofficial film gave huge credibility to fan films and proved that they could be just as satisfactory as their feature-length comrades.
The latest fan endeavor takes place in the Star Wars universe, focusing on Darth Maul, a menacing Sith Lord that made his entrance in Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace. I think we can all agree that the prequels were wholly disappointing, but Darth Maul is something that we can fondly look back on as one of the few highlights in the trilogy. And that double-edged lightsaber was not something to mess with.

Directed by Shawn Bu, Darth Maul: Apprentice is the result of a two-year production, which after watching, you’ll understand why it took so long. “We always felt that Darth Maul should have had more screen time. So we wanted to create a film just for him with the best lightsaber fights we could do!” he explains. Check out the 17-minute feature up top and stay tuned for what I’m sure will be a fascinating “Making Of”…
