“Star Wars” and “Deadpool” Lead the Pack for the 2016 MTV Movie Award Nominees

MTV Movie Awards

With the 88th Academy Awards behind us, we can set our sights on the 2016 MTV Movie Awards. There’s been heavy discussion about the lack of diversity at award shows and Hollywood at large, but MTV looks to rectify one of those problems with their own ceremony. “This show is about fandom and the stars come out to celebrate that,” Executive Producer Casey Patterson said in a press release. “The nominees and the content are naturally diverse and eclectic because we’re a true reflection of real movie-going audiences.”

He’s right. Prestigious award shows typically ignore movie-going audiences, and often cater to the diehard cinephiles, critics, and the film industry as a whole. That being said, Star Wars: The Force Awakens earned the most recognition with 11 nominations. Deadpool takes a close second place with eight, and notoriously snubbed films like Straight Outta Compton received plenty of nominations as well, including Movie of the Year. Additionally, the awards ceremony added two new categories – True Story and Documentary.

Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart will co-host the 2016 MTV Movie Awards, a strategic move to promote their upcoming comedy Central Intelligence. The ceremony will air live April 10. To get all the dirt on the big show, head over to MTV.
