It was once thought that cyphers, one of hip-hop’s first channels of creative expression, were thought to be a lost art form. Though some hip-hop “old heads” feel as if the music they’ve loved for decades has taken a nosedive, that has been proven to be far from the truth,  as cyphers have made a resounding resurgence particularly in the last few years. Determined to keep the momentum going, the good folks over at Footaction put together their first ever “Footaction Family Cypher,” to celebrate some of the industry’s brightest up-and-coming talents. Filmed while they were visiting Austin, Texas, for the coveted South by Southwest festival, the cypher features talents such as “Power” actor and singer Rotimi, Taylor Bennett (brother to Chance The Rapper), Sylvan Lacue, and L.A. Van Gogh.

As part of Footaction’s #OwnIt series, Rotimi, Taylor, Sylvan, and L.A. each spit a 16-bar cypher freestyle to the tunes curated by New York’s own DJ Austin Millz.  Outfitted in their best from the Footaction vault, the group delivered never-before-heard rhymes in a traditional yet unique style that is sure to impress hip-hop purists everywhere.
